Professor of Law at the University of Coimbra until 2015.

Professor at the Faculty of Law of the Portucalense University - Infante D. Henrique (Porto).

He was also Professor at the Faculty of Law of Lusiada University (Porto).

He was a lecturer at Macau University, Luanda – Agostinho Neto University and at Brazilian Universities such as S. Paulo, Curitiba and João Pessoa and also taught in other universities and research centers both in Portugal and abroad, namely in Spain, France, Germany, Slovakia, the United States and China.

He is the author of extensive publications in the areas of Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedural Law, Criminology and Criminal Policy and studies in several languages.

Researcher and jurisprudence critic, participated in the elaboration of several legislative projects.

Prior member of the Portuguese Superior Council of Judiciary and Expert on several committees at the Council of Europe.

Member of the Constitutional Parliament, has participated in the preparation of the Portuguese Republic Constitution of 1976 and its revisions of 1982 and 1989.

Member of the Portuguese Parliament from 1976 to 1995.

Awarded by the President of the Republic as Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique in 2009

President of the Constitutional Court since July 2016.

Councillor of the State, by inherent function of President of the Constitutional Court.
